Know your formats — from 15cm to life-size

• S.H. Figuarts & articulated figures — Bandai’s collector line does Marvel as well as it does anime: around 15cm, heavily articulated, swappable hands and faces. The affordable way into this category and the format that gets handled, posed and photographed. Typically £60–£100.
• Hot Toys sixth scale — the 1/6 Masterpiece standard: roughly 30cm tall, tailored fabric costumes, sculpted likenesses that photograph like film stills. These are the figures other figures are compared to. £300–£380, and worth planning shelf space around.
• Statues, busts & art scale — fixed-pose display sculpture from Iron Studios and Sideshow: 1/10 art scale dioramas up to full character busts. No articulation, all presence. Broadly £225–£600.
• 1:1 prop replicas — the stuff of grail shelves: full-size prop weapons from around £80, up to wearable helmets and life-size masks at £850. These are furniture-grade pieces — measure the room, not the shelf.
• Fine-art prints — Sideshow’s licensed limited-run prints, including holofoil editions. Wall real estate for the collection, £95–£225.

Which franchises? (what’s actually on the shelves here)

The deepest bench is Marvel — Figuarts Spider-Man and Iron Man through Hot Toys Punisher and Daredevil to X-Men pieces and holofoil prints. DC runs from an Arkham Batman to a Killing Joke Joker bust, and there’s a properly strong Masters of the Universe line — two very different Skeletors plus full-size prop weapons. Around those sit the icons: TMNT, ThunderCats, Ghostbusters, Star Wars, Terminator, Fallout and Harry Potter. It’s a curated wall, not a warehouse — allocations land, sell through, and get replaced by the next thing worth stocking.

How to choose — first piece or grail piece

• Measure before you fall in love. A sixth-scale figure is ~30cm tall and needs depth as well as height; a 1/10 diorama has a footprint like a dinner plate; a 1:1 helmet wants a plinth or a cabinet of its own. Dimensions are on every product page — check them against the actual shelf.
• Set the budget by the job. Under £100 buys the articulated heartland — genuinely display-worthy, zero regret. £250–£400 is Hot Toys and art-scale territory: one piece that anchors a shelf. £600+ is grail country — busts and life-size replicas you plan the room around.
• One centrepiece beats five mid-shelf pieces. The collections that look best are built around a single anchor with support around it — not five near-misses fighting for attention. Buy the piece you actually stare at.
• Don’t fear the pre-order. Almost everything in this category is allocation-based and made in one production run — when a Hot Toys or EFX run sells through, it’s gone. Reserving here costs £0, so the early decision is free.

The fakes problem (worse at the top end, not better)

The more a piece costs, the more it’s worth faking. Counterfeit sixth-scale figures and recast statues are a real marketplace problem — convincing boxes, real product photos, wrong thing inside — and at £300+ a bad buy genuinely hurts. The tells are the same as ever: a price well under RRP on an in-demand piece, stock of something long sold out, a seller with no traceable supply chain. The fraction of real character height. A 1/6 (sixth scale) figure of a six-foot character stands around 30cm; 1/10 art scale runs around 18–25cm with a sculpted base; 1:1 means life-size. Exact dimensions are listed on every product page.
