Buying anime merch for someone when you don’t watch anime yourself? Totally doable — you just need three things: which series they love, what kind of figure suits them, and roughly what to spend. Here’s the lot, in plain English.

Which anime are they into?

(You’ll usually spot it from a poster, a hoodie, or their phone case.)

• Dragon Ball — The one that started it all: spiky-haired warriors powering up in glowing auras. It’s the most recognised anime on the planet, so a Goku or Vegeta figure is the safest bet going if you’re unsure. Grew up on Saturday-morning cartoons? This is theirs.
• One Piece — A globe-trotting pirate crew led by the stretchy, straw-hatted Luffy. The best-selling manga in history, with a devoted worldwide fanbase — anyone into it tends to be seriously into it.
• Naruto — Ninjas, ramen and a lot of heart. The defining anime for millennials and older Gen-Z; a Naruto or Sasuke piece hits the nostalgia hard.
• Demon Slayer — A young swordsman in a checkered cloak hunting demons to save his sister. The breakout hit of recent years, huge with newer fans, and genuinely beautiful on a shelf.
• Jujutsu Kaisen — Dark, stylish, modern sorcery-horror. Massive right now — especially Gojo and Yuji — and a strong pick for a teen or twenty-something.
• My Hero Academia — A superhero high school; anime-meets-Marvel. Very popular with younger fans, and a great shout if you know they like superheroes.

What kind of figure? (the formats, explained)

• Nendoroid — Cute, chibi-style and palm-sized (~10cm), with big heads and swappable faces and hands. Charming, affordable (usually £30–45), and the friendliest first figure — ideal for a younger or casual fan.
• Nendoroid Doll — A Nendoroid head on a poseable, dressable body with real fabric clothes. A touch pricier (~£55–80); lovely for fans who like the cuter, collectible side.
• S.H. Figuarts & action figures — Detailed, highly poseable and screen-accurate (~15cm), with interchangeable hands and effect parts. For the serious fan who wants dynamic poses. Usually £45–90.
• Pop Up Parade & scale statues — Fixed-pose display pieces, from affordable (~£25) to large premium centrepieces (£100+). No articulation — these are all about the “wow” on the shelf.

How much should I spend?
