Did you know?
Heroes in a half shell — from an indie comic joke to a global phenomenon. Here's the story behind the TMNT figures you're collecting.
- It started as a joke. Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird created the Turtles in 1984 as a one-off parody of gritty comics like Daredevil — Eastman sketched a turtle with nunchucks and they ran with it.
- Funded by a tax refund. The pair self-published issue #1 through their own Mirage Studios using a tax refund and a family loan — a print run of just 3,000 copies (now hugely valuable).
- A tribute hidden in the origin. The Turtles' radioactive-ooze origin directly echoes Daredevil's — the same kind of accident that blinded Matt Murdock created the Turtles.
- From indie to empire. That parody spawned cartoons, films, video games and one of the biggest toy lines ever — not bad for a joke between two friends.
- 90s icons. Vintage Playmates TMNT figures are collector staples, and modern lines keep the shells flying off shelves.
